Hun Hunshi Hunshilal (Love in the Time of Malaria. Gujarati with English subtitles) 138 minutes, 1992
In the fictitious country of Khojpuri contended citizens sleep, work and follow rules set forth by King Bhadrabhoop. All is not well though. A strange illness is spreading. Bitten by mysterious mosquitoes, some people become restless and agitated, and start to question their King. Hunshilal, a loyalist, joins the battle against the mosquitoes. He begins work on anti-mosquito medicines at the Queen’s Lab. Here he falls in love with his colleague Parveen, who reciprocates his feelings, but things change when Hunshi discovers that Parveen has been infected by the mosquito illness too.

Mappa Mundi: The Map of the World
Will reflect on a specific context (1950s and 60s) of intense interaction between the literary and the visual arts in Baroda and how this translates into the ongoing moment. Ajay will read from his work of fiction (Gujarati and its English translation) constructed around Gulammohammed Sheikh’s Mappa Mundi, a series that celebrates trans- cultural histories and contemporary events. Sheikh and Jorge Luis Borges appear as characters in this work-in-progress.
