Dust, (Hindi with English subtitles), 80 min, 2019
A photograph offers a clue to a man retracing the footsteps of his dead love. The photograph captures a moment in the life of a little boy making his way through a landscape brutalised by civil war unfolding in the ‘hinterlands’ of central India. Having fled this hinterland, a young woman attempts to find her anchor in the city, which too is brutalised by cycles of violence. The film tells a story of loss and displacement, of love, loyalty and survival.

With special focus on Bastar, the talk reflects on the role of language in identity and conservation among indigenous peoples.
